The work of chisels can be divided into two types-chiseling and cutting. Different chisels are used for different purposes.
The most widely used chisel is the diagonal chisel, which is mostly used to fix the dead angle or joint surface of wood.
Flat chisel-Compared with the inclined chisel, the blade is thinner and longer. It is mainly used to smooth the bottom surface or remove some small wood chips.
Mortise chisel-large cross-section blade and thick chisel handle, mainly used for mortising.
Oblique edge chisel-a kind of oblique chisel, the blade is inclined, it is easy to touch the dead corner, used for chamfering or cutting grooves.
Chisel is one of the tools commonly used in woodworking. Whether a chisel is easy to use or not depends on the quality of the sharpening. After the chisel is sharpened, the center of the chisel edge should be recessed, in a crescent shape, and the depth of recess should generally be 1-1.5mm. The extension length of the two corners should be the same, and it should not be ground into an oblique shape.
Some woodworkers also know the requirements mentioned above, but in the specific grinding process, they can't meet the standard. Sometimes they may be ground into a protruding crescent shape. Someone had to make a deep groove in the middle of the chisel blade. In this way, the chisel blade was neither sharp nor unsightly, and there were problems such as difficulty in removing slag from the outside.
How can we grind a chisel that meets the requirements?
The method is very simple. When sharpening the chisel, place the chisel on the edge of the grindstone and push and pull. When pushing and pulling on the left edge of the grindstone, the right edge of the sharpening edge occupies 2/3 of the full edge; push and pull on the right edge of the grindstone. When, the left side of the sharpening edge occupies 2/3 of the full edge. In this way, it is possible to grind the chisel blade to meet the requirements by repeatedly pushing and pulling alternately.
When buying a woodworking chisel, pay attention to the following points:
1. Looking at the shape, woodworking chisels have thick and slender shapes, and you can choose them according to your own usage. For chiseling hardwood or thicker wood, choose a sturdy chisel, and choose a slender chisel for cork or puwood.
2. Looking at the appearance, the wood chisels produced by the factory are generally carefully processed, exquisitely crafted and smoothly polished. Chisels made by private blacksmiths are generally not finely processed, so the surface of the chisel is relatively rough.
3. Look at the chiseled trousers, whether the front of the chiseled trousers, the chisel body, and the chisel blade are on the same centerline, and whether the chiseled trousers, the side of the chisel body, and the chisel blade are on the same centerline. If the above two points are met, the chiseled trousers The chisel body and the chisel blade are positive, and the chisel handle is also positive after the chisel handle is installed.
4. Look at the cutting edge, the quality of woodworking chisels and the speed of use depend on the cutting edge of the chisel, commonly known as steel cutting. Choosing a chisel with a hard steel mouth can save time and effort.
